Google Ads or Meta Ads: Which Should a Small Business Start With?
5 August 2025 · 7 min read

A practical framework for choosing your first paid channel based on how customers actually discover your category.
Capture demand or create it
Google captures demand that already exists. Someone types what they want and you appear. Meta creates demand by putting an offer in front of people who were not actively searching.
The right first channel depends on whether people already search for what you sell.
Start with Google when
Search volume exists and the purchase is considered or urgent.
- You provide a service people look up when a problem occurs
- Your category has clear search terms with local intent
- Your margin supports a higher cost per click
- You can answer enquiries quickly
Start with Meta when
The product is visual, impulse-friendly or new to the market.
- Your product looks good on camera
- Nobody is searching for your category by name yet
- You have a strong introductory offer
- You can produce fresh creative regularly
The budget question
Do not split a small budget across both. Concentrate spend on one channel until you know your cost per lead, then expand. Splitting early produces two sets of inconclusive data.
